The Red Hook Village Police Department will hold a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 28 between 10am and 2pm at Village Hall.

“We are particularly looking for unused or expired prescription narcotics, which are especially dangerous.” said Police Chief James Truitt. “This is a way to keep them out of the hands of people who may abuse them.”

During October’s take-back event, the police collected what Truitt described as “several garbage bins worth” of unused prescription medicine.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prescription drugs account for more overdose fatalities than street drugs such as heroin and cocaine. The problem is especially acute among teenagers. According to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) survey, approximately 1 in 7 teenagers admits to abusing prescription medication to get high.

The Red Hook event is being held in conjunction with Northern Dutchess Communities That Care and the DEA.
