Officials at the Red Hook School District are deciding what stays and what goes as they construct the budget that will come before voters this May. This will be the first year that the district faces the new property tax cap.
The town chose to override the tax cap to help pay for the new highway garage and the county drained the rainy day fund to avoid tax hikes. The school district has to find $565,000 in cuts from last year’s budget to stay under the cap. Do they cut more teachers and staff? Kindergarten costs $600K. Sports are $350K. Should they go?
