A pop history crossing in Rhinebeck

County Executive Marc Molinaro leads the way as he and Village Trustee Howie Traudt, Rhinebeck Village Mayor Heath Tortarella (with shoes on due to a chilly September), and Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce President Sean Kemp recreate the Beatles’ iconic Abbey Road album cover at the village’s new crosswalk on West Market St. The nod to the legendary 1969 photo followed a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept 17 for Rhinebeck’s two new crosswalks. The projects, including the other one on Route 9 in front of M&T Bank, were paid for with Community Development Block Grant funds provided by the federal government and distributed by the county. Tortarella thanked the Chamber of Commerce, the village’s Pedestrian Taskforce, village engineer Nancy Clark of Erdman Anthony Engineering and Clara Sauer, the grant writer, for their efforts. “Rhinebeck has always been a walkable community…The fact that you have engaged in a broader plan to make Rhinebeck that much more pedestrian-friendly, it’s important….There are very few communities as exceptionally forward-thinking as Rhinebeck village,” Molinaro said.
