New turn lane for Rhinebeck, new light for Tivoli

The dangerous Tivoli intersection on Route 9G may finally be a safer place to drive through. And those traveling to Rhinebeck and points south from Route 9G will have an easier time at the Route 9-9G intersection.

A new four-way flashing light at the intersection of West Kerley Corners Road and Broadway and wider shoulders along a 4.8 mile stretch of the Route 9G corridor are now a reality, the state’s latest solutions to local requests for safety measures.

Road crews are still working on Route 9G from Route 199 to the Columbia County line but stopped last week so they can create a right-hand turn lane on Route 9G at the Route 9 intersection. That work, according to DOT Information Officer Beau Duffy, should be finished this week, weather permitting.

Then the crew returns to the Tivoli-area project, but there are no plans to repave the patched road at this point.

“The Route 9G project is a full-depth reconstruction of the shoulders, repairing the pavement deficiencies (on the shoulder) to smooth out the surface,” Duffy said, adding that the work is ahead of schedule, and will be completed this summer. “The work remaining is installation of new driveway aprons, guide rails, and ditch cleaning.”

Officials and residents alike have called for state action since the hit-and-run deaths of two Bard College students in January and the death of a local man in March in a two-car crash near the Tivoli intersection.

The state finished installing the four-way overhead blinking light at the intersection May 15.
