The third annual Read Local! Red Hook Literary Festival will take place Fri., April 11, and Sat., April 12, in the village of Red Hook.

Highlights from the multiple events, all free, include book discussions, writing panels, a lunch focused on fiction and special sessions for young readers.

The festival will open with a reception April 11 at 5pm at Red Hook CAN, 7516 N. Broadway, which will also celebrate “Word Works,” the RHCAN exhibition featuring area artists inspired by the written word. Following the reception, Bard College literature teacher Anne Margaret Daniel will lead a discussion of The Big Read’s featured book, “Housekeeping,” by Marilynne Robinson.

The festival will end April 12 with a 7pm presentation of “Stories on Stage: Hudson Valley Actors Read Stories by Hudson Valley Authors” at the Linden Avenue Middle School Café, 65 West Market Street.

The evening of short stories features Woodstock Players founder Carey Harrison (“Rex & Rex”) reading TC Boyle, Emmy Award-winner David Smilow (“Racing Daylight”) reading George Saunders, Broadway veteran Lori Wilner (“Fiddler on the Roof”) reading Teresa Giordano, and Tony and Obie Award winner Mary Louise Wilson (“Nebraska”) reading her own works.

There will be book signings following each panel at Bread & Bottle, located on the corner of Main and Market streets in the village of Red Hook.
