The AARP Tax-Aide program in conjunction with the IRS and the Hudson Valley CASH Coalition are again offering a free, volunteer-run tax preparation service for low to moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older.

You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service, which includes a free electronic filing for both federal and New York State tax returns.

The CASH Coalition reports 3,913 returns were prepared last year for low and middle income persons, including seniors, according to a news release from the Dutchess County Office for the Aging.

This year, low- to moderate-income working families earning less than $52,427 and individuals making less than $14,590 could be entitled to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Eighteen sites all around Dutchess County are now open and appointments are available through April 15. Dial 211 (or 1-800-899-1479) for site locations, hours or an appointment. More information about the program, as well as 24-hour, year-round tax assistance, can be found at their website: www.aarp.org/taxaide

In addition, the Dutchess County of Aging is looking for residents who will be turning 100 or older anytime this year or celebrating 70 or more years of marriage? If you know them, call (845) 486-2555 so the Aging Office can invite them to its annual Celebration of Aging luncheon, which is held each May, Older Americans Month. Also honored at the celebration are the Dutchess County Senior Citizens of the Year. If you know of a senior citizen who deserves this very special recognition, fill out a nomination form which you can obtain from our office or on Page 6 of the winter edition of the Spotlight on Seniors newsletter, found on our website:
