John F. Kelly, 89, passed away January 14 in Houston, Texas. John was born February 19, 1924 in Bronx, NY. He graduated from Evander Childs High School and continued his education earning a Bachelors Degree at New York University and a Masters Degree at SUNY @ New Paltz. He worked primarily at the Astor Home for Children in Rhinebeck, New York. He was a skilled cabinet maker leaving a legacy of his work throughout New York. He married the love of his life Elizabeth Mary Gately on February 12, 1949 at Immaculate Conception in Bronx, NY.
John served in World War Two, “The Big One,” in the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper in the Philippines. He earned four commendations of bravery while fighting for his country.
John is preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas, Joseph, Edward and Raymond and his sisters Kathleen and Florence and son Vincent. He is survived by Eileen Cummings of Willmington, NC and Hugh Kelly of Belle Harbor, NY. John is survived by his wife, Bette, his children and spouses: Gerard Kelly of Barrytown, New York, Mary Kelly of New York, New York, Patricia Buford of New York, New York, Ann Marie and Yoav Resnick of New York, New York, Catherine and Rodney Strong of Greenville, Texas, Barbara and Peter Bailey of Katy, Texas, Jeanne Kelly of Venice, Florida and Dorothy and Stefan Drewes of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by twenty truly loved grandchildren and several great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He had many nieces and nephews who have fond memories of him.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bartholomew, Katy, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project.
