North Park Elementary teacher wins national accolades

Hyde Park has a truly “amazing” teacher in its midst.

Margaret Robelee, a physical education teacher at North Park Elementary and a coach for the past 30 years, has been given the 2013 Amazing Person of the Year Award for the southeastern zone of the state by the Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (APHERD).

That award also earned her another. She was named the Eastern United States Physical Educator of the Year Award, which qualifies her as one of six possible recipients of National recognition in Physical Education.

At the Board of Education meeting Jan. 9, Superintendent Greer Rychcik acknowledged Robelee’s achievements.

Noting that the national recognition award will be decided at an April conference for Nationals in St Louis, Rychcik said, “Whether you’re the winner or not, you are number one, not only here but in the whole eastern coast of the United States, and we are so honored to have someone of your caliber and everything you do in our district.”

In 2011, Robelee was named New York State’s Physical Educator of the Year by AHPERD as a result of her contributions to the district by writing grants securing equipment, securing funds to introduce yoga to primary students, and publishing articles in P.E. Central, a website offering information on physical education for P.E. teachers and other interested readers.
