Letters: Running for Roger

On Oct. 27, I ran the Cape Cod Marathon, in Falmouth, Mass., for a very special little boy.

I am running for 3-year-old Roger, who was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, AMC for short. AMC affects 1 in every 3,000 births and is a muscle and joint condition that occurs in utero. Babies are born with curved and fixed joints, limited range of motion, and extremely decreased or missing muscles. Most children are not affected cognitively and grow up to lead independent lives. Treatment usually includes occupational and physical therapy, surgeries and other medical procedures.

I will let Roger’s mom, Lisa Loughran, tell you what he is now facing:

“On January 4, 2010, our beautiful son, Roger, was born affected with amyoplasia in all four limbs. To this date, Roger has had three major surgeries. This October, Roger will be facing his fourth surgery and a series of treatments, which include casting of his left foot for recurring club foot, followed by tendon release, a Botox injection to the right quad to assist with range of motion on the right knee, which will involve serial casting and also an osteotomy on his right arm. So at some point he will be casted in both legs and his arm at the same time during these procedures.”

Lisa says that during her pregnancy, when Roger’s condition was uncovered by sonogram, she and her husband came across the AMC support website, www.amcsupport.org, which gave them inspiration and hope and some idea of what to expect. ” It was during all of the subsequent tests that we really relied on the AMC support group, and we were truly filled with hope and faith that our child, no matter how much he or she was affected, was going to be a blessing,” Lisa recalls.

This will be my 18th marathon to date, but my first one since 2008. Five years later and five years older, but I am determined to run the 26.2 miles for this beautiful boy. My ultimate goal is to raise at least $2,600 for AMCSI. If you would like to donate, please make a check out to AMCSI and send it to: Lisa Loughran, PO Box 592, Red Hook, NY 12571.

If you would like to learn more about AMC, visit www.amcsupport.org. AMCSI is a non-profit organization and funds are needed to support online forums, awareness materials and events.
