At 2pm, the sculpture and the sculptor Andres San Millan will leave his home in Barrytown escorted by 20 friends on foot to arrive at Taste Budd’s Cafe on West Market Street.
A public reception at 4pm will follow the arrival and installation of “MAN, “ a 12-foot-high crouching figure made from gathered Hudson River driftwood and inspired by Native American history and culture. “MAN” will be on display through 2013.
About the unusual mode of transportation, San Millan said in a news release, “There’s something very appealing about the physical experience of carrying the large sculpture on foot. It would be much easier to use a truck, but in doing so we would miss the opportunity for ritual and for the collective creation of meaning.”
San Millan and his wife, Marguerite, are co-founders and creative directors of Cocoon Theatre, a non-profit visual and performing arts organization based in Rhinebeck.
Snow date for the ceremonial procession and installation will be Sunday, Jan. 27.
