Red Hook rips Rhinebeck in raucous rout at Kyle classic

Both Rhinebeck and Red Hook sent out their starters in the third. Red came out fast on a Michitsch right corner two-point field goal and a Rogers three-pointer to make it 42-23 at the 6:09 mark. Rhinebeck looked more than a little desperate in the early third, hoisting shots early in possession. Purple’s only field goal of the quarter came at the 2:47 mark, courtesy of Hoynes, and scored three points total with the addition of a made Will Burns free throw. Avis keyed two lay-ups in the final minute to give Red Hook a 51-26 lead going into the fourth.

Hoynes was big for Rhinebeck in the final quarter, pouring in eight points on a three-pointer, two two-pointers, and a sunk free throw, but it wasn’t enough to stop a rolling Raiders squad. Hare scored two baskets on heads-up forced turnovers early in the quarter. Red’s 6’4” freshman Colin Bemis checked in in the waning minutes and recorded a layup to serious fanfare. Rhinebeck’s Eric Rodriguez netted two two-point field goals at the end of the game, one on a driving hook shot, but it was far too little, too late.

“It was a fun atmosphere. I wish every game had an atmosphere like this one . It was a great game, against a local rival, for a great cause. I know the kids like playing in a game like this,” Hayes told the Observer after the game.

He added, “In the three games we’ve played, we’ve kept the other teams in the 30s. We did a better job tonight on ball pressure, we still need to do some work away from the ball. We came into the game wanting a 3:1 margin on rebounds, and I think we did that. The kids played hard and it was a good win – to Rhinebeck’s credit, Rhinebeck plays hard and they didn’t go away. But we’re happy right now with where we’re at.”

Hoynes led all scorers with 15 points; Hare led Red Hook with 13. Red Hook and Rhinebeck will not meet again this season. Red Hook’s next regular season game will be at Highland on Jan. 4 at 5:30pm, and Rhinebeck’s was scheduled at Webutuck on
Dec. 27.
