Fallen tree causes propane leak in Rhinebeck

Hurricane Sandy sent a large tree downward onto a propane tank in Rhinebeck Oct. 29, causing a gas leak at 12 White Well Drive. The Rhinebeck Fire Department reported that the fallen tree had snapped off a valve on the top of the 1000-gallon propane tank and the gas was escaping into the air. The homeowner, Jan Zennario, was evacuated, and two hose streams were deployed with a fog pattern to disperse the escaping vapors.

When the gas company arrived, it was decided to let the gas continue to escape. The operation took two and a half hours to complete. Assisting the Rhinebeck Fire department in a water-relay operations were the Red Hook and Hillside departments; West Clinton stood by at the Rhinebeck fire station.
