Richard L. Purdy, 72, of Red Hook, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the Kindred Hospital Park View in Springfield, MA.
Born on May 7, 1940, in Cold Springs, NY, he was the son of the late Eugene and Edna (Collard) Purdy. Richard married Bernice Holst on September 23, 1995 in New Paltz, and she survives at home in Red Hook.
Richard served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman in Germany and West Point.
After leaving the service, he was employed by IBM in both Poughkeepsie and Kingston. He retired as manager and following his retirement he became a caretaker of a large estate in Millbrook.
Richard loved to garden, cook, and spend time with his family. He always had a smile for everyone.
In addition to his wife Bernice, he is survived by his daughter; Rebecca Rousses of Poughkeepsie, a son; Eugene Purdy of Port Ewen, his step daughters; Michelle Ticcony and her husband Mark of Poughkeepsie, and Tammy Stark and her husband Brent of Bryan, OH. In addition, he is survived by his grandsons; George Roussos, Jack Ticcony, and Jeremy Stark, and his granddaughters; Megan Roussos and Sara Stark.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday July 21, 2012 at 11 am at the United Methodist Church of Red Hook. The Rev. Jennifer Tiernan-Bindler will officiate. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to United Methodist Church of Red Hook, 4 Church St, Red Hook, NY 12571.
