Red Hook police arrest 4 in mailbox vandalism

The Red Hook Police Department reported the arrest of four young people in connection with damage to several mailboxes in the Town of Red Hook over the past month. Arrested in the incidents, in which baseball bats were apparently used, were three local male residents — two 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old — and an 18-year-old female from Millbrook.

The arrests follow a series of complaints filed over the past few weeks by local residents who found their mailboxes damaged or destroyed. On the evening of April 26, police were advised by 911 dispatchers that a caller had witnessed a vehicle traveling in the Red Hook area with someone hanging out the window with a baseball bat possibly smashing mailboxes according to a police statement. After investigating, the police determined the make and model of the vehicle and the persons involved.

According to the police, all four suspects confessed to vandalizing multiple mailboxes in the town during the month of April and all four were charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief. They were released on tickets to appear in the Town of Red Hook court at a later date.
